Distortion is below the 0.1 % measurement limit of an HP 334A analyzer; the SoundPlus chips used are rated at 0.0003 %. The XLR output drives 600 Ω lines, and maximum output is into a 600 Ω load. Gain includes the inverse conversion.
Before you start
Connect first.
Power last.
Three things, in this order, every time you change your system.
Read before switching on
- Make every connection before you switch on this unit and the rest of your system.
- Never change connections while the system is on. Doing so can damage your equipment.
- Always start with the main system volume turned fully counterclockwise, to off. Mishaps happen, so take care.

Where it goes in your system.

Matched cables
Use high-quality RCA and balanced XLR cables, with the left and right cables of equal length.
Long XLR, short RCA
XLR cables can run more than 100 ft with no loss of signal quality. Keep RCA cables short: about 6 ft is usually fine with quality cable.
Set-up
Set the controls.
Before you listen, set everything like this.
-
Power
Switch it up. The green LED lights.
Set to: on
Then
- Switch on the main system and all amplifiers, with every volume control at minimum.
- Listen to your normal stereo first and make sure everything sounds right.
Design notes
How it was built.
- +3 dB
- Signal gain, with inverse conversion added.
- 100 ft+
- XLR cable runs with no loss of signal quality.
- 65 kHz
- Switching supply with no transformer, for noiseless DC.
- An all-metal housing shields the electronics from external RF sources and noise fields.
- The AC line input is fully RF filtered.
- The internal supply uses no transformer: an AC-to-DC switcher running at 65 kHz feeds ± linear regulators for noiseless DC power.
MaintenanceCare
Cleaning. Use a damp cloth only, never glass cleaners or alcohol-based products.
Surge protection. Put a surge protector on the power line, against a nearby lightning strike or a line-level overload.
